The work below is grouped by the kind of problem rather than listed alphabetically, because that is usually how people arrive at it.
Rodent work starts with understanding what is actually happening rather than reaching for bait. Where the activity is, what is sustaining it — food, water, harbourage — and how the rodents are getting in are the questions that decide whether the problem is dealt with or simply paused.
The route in is frequently structural rather than obvious: a damaged or missing air brick opening the sub-floor void, gaps where service pipes pass through a wall, an open drain inspection cover, or damage at roof level behind soffits and under tiles. Treatment is selected for the species and the situation, with monitoring where the case calls for it, and potential entry points and building defects are set out with practical proofing recommendations.
Closing an entry route reduces the risk of recurrence. It is not a promise that rodents will never return.
Wasp nests are treated where the position makes them a genuine problem — beside a door, a path, a window, a child’s bedroom or a work area, or inside a roof void where wasps are entering the living space. Not every nest needs treating; one high on a gable away from where people pass may be better left until the colony dies off naturally in the autumn.
Where treatment is appropriate the nest is located first, then treated at the entry point. Wasps returning to the nest carry the product in with them, so activity usually continues for a short period afterwards rather than stopping immediately.
Fly problems are usually about the source rather than the flies themselves: identifying the breeding site, whether that is drainage, waste, a dead bird or rodent in a void, or something outside the building.
Correct identification decides the treatment here more than anywhere else, and preparation by the occupier often decides whether it works. Flea and bed bug treatments in particular usually need thorough vacuuming, laundering and clear access to floor edges and furniture before a visit; anything required is explained when the visit is arranged.
Several of these insects are found because of something else — fleas from a pet or a previous occupant’s pet, moths in stored textiles, silverfish where there is damp. Where that is the case it is worth saying so, because treating the insect without addressing the cause tends to produce a repeat visit.

Birds are a different kind of job because the law comes first. All wild birds, their nests while in use and their eggs are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, so an active nest cannot simply be removed. What can be done, and when, depends on the species and on whether the nest is in use. Proofing is as much a building job as a pest job: the right specification for the position, fixed properly, on a surface that will hold it.
Squirrels in a roof void are handled under the relevant legislation, and moles are dealt with in gardens, paddocks and grounds. Solar panel protection covers the gap between the panel and the roof covering, which makes a sheltered nesting space for pigeons and gulls.
Woodworm — wood-boring beetle activity in structural timber, floorboards, roof timbers and furniture. Identifying whether the activity is current matters before anything is treated, because old exit holes are not evidence of a live infestation.
Loft clearance — where a roof void has been fouled by birds or rodents, clearing and cleaning the affected material is often the sensible step before or alongside proofing.
Thermal imaging for bees in walls — a specialist diagnostic tool, not a routine part of every bee enquiry. Where bees are suspected inside a cavity or chimney and the location is not obvious from outside, thermal imaging can help establish where the colony actually is before anything is opened up. Most bee enquiries do not need it, and bees are treated differently from wasps.
Most rat problems are resolved above ground, by working out how the rats are getting in and closing that route. Most rat problems are not drain-related, and drainage is not the first thing to look at.
Occasionally a property keeps producing rat activity after treatment and a proper survey finds no route in above ground. Activity returns in the same place, in the same way, with nothing outside to explain it. That pattern — not the age of the building — is what makes the drainage system worth investigating, alongside a second look at potential entry points, structural defects and inspection chambers.
A CCTV drain investigation puts a camera into the system so it can be looked at rather than guessed at: a cracked or collapsed section, a displaced joint, a disused branch that was never sealed, a defective connection at a chamber, or a failed interceptor trap. Where a defect is found you are told what it is and what needs doing; drainage repairs are building work, so where a contractor is needed I say so. Background: do I have rats in my drain?
Work for businesses across the same areas: restaurants, cafés, bars and food premises, offices and shops, hotels and guest houses, warehouses and industrial units, and for landlords, letting agents and HMOs.
The requirement is different from a domestic job. What matters is not only clearing the current problem but being able to show what was found, what was done and what was recommended. Inspection covers the areas that actually decide the outcome — kitchens and prep areas, dry stores, cellars, bin stores and the external yard, ducting and service voids, and the gaps behind and beneath fixed equipment — and structural or housekeeping issues are reported plainly rather than treated around indefinitely.
A written record of inspection, treatment and recommendations can support a business’s pest-management and food-safety records and gives you something to show an inspector. Pest control is not always just treatment. Where it is relevant, a visit looks at what the building and its surroundings are contributing: potential entry points, harbourage, food and water sources, the construction and condition of the property, and anything outside that is feeding the problem.
Where appropriate, I may be able to deal with small, straightforward entry points during a visit without an additional charge. More substantial proofing, building work or drainage repairs are discussed separately where required.
Where something needs a builder or a drainage contractor rather than a pest controller, you are told what needs doing and why, rather than being sold another treatment.
Not every job needs every stage. A wasp nest in an obvious position is a short visit; a recurring rat problem in a converted terrace is not. This is the order I work in when the situation calls for it.
