When further investigation is justified: rats and drains

Most rat problems are not drain-related. Far more begin with a gap in the building fabric, an accessible roof or sub-floor void, an available food source, or harbourage in the garden or on neighbouring land. But where rat activity keeps returning and no route in can be found above ground, a defect in the underground drainage — a cracked pipe, a displaced joint, a redundant or disconnected branch, or a broken interceptor trap — is worth ruling out.
